The Department of Chemistry was established in 1975. It was among few departments at the time of establishment of Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman by the late Alireza Afzalipur. It started with only 14 undergraduate students in Pure Chemistry and has gradually developed enormously since. Currently, it has 360 undergraduate students in two branches of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Post-graduate levels for Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) education were established in 1978 and 1994, respectively. Five students enrolled for M.Sc. education at chemistry department, but it has grown to 45-50 students each year. Presently, 86 students are studying at M.Sc. and 45 students are studying at Ph.D. levels. The students are studying in the main branches of chemistry, i.e., analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, nano chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.

The department takes pride in its teaching excellence and training of distinguished scientists. With 24 academic staff including 8 professors, 7 associate professors and 9 assistant professors, and over 130 graduate students, the department has educated thousands of students since its establishment and has been very active in research and innovation. It is also a department of service to all science-based faculties of the University. With its present 23 research laboratories and workshops, equipped with the state of the art instruments, it has performed important original research in several areas of chemistry including, analytical, environmental, organic, inorganic, physical, theoretical and natural product chemistry. Only in the year 2013, more than 42 research papers have been published in highly respectable international journals. The graduates of this department have provided skilled manpower for most universities and industries in Iran, and continue to contribute to the development of the nation in many areas of research, education and industry.
